Book Design & Systems Development: Patagonia Business Library.
Packs together the three books that act as the companies main foundation and ethos into sustainable business and activism. Yvon’s book Let My People Go Surfing was a redesign for Penguin, while Tool’s For Grassroots Activism was a new offering by the company. The three books followed the same principle that the reader was the most important piece of the title and were given space to mark-up sections for later use.
Specs: (6.5x9.5") The system was developed to link Patagonia’s past with the present. Showing continuity between imagery, ethos, and activism. Typefaces: Avenir, Sentinel, and Belwe. Can be seen as somewhat disparate characters, but work to create a bridge between early/current dirtbags.

“The original intent in 2005 for writing Let My People Go Surfing was for it to be a philosophical manual for the employees of Patagonia. I never expected at that time that this simple book would be translated into more than ten languages, be used in high schools and colleges and even be influential in large corporations… We have always considered Patagonia an experiment in doing business in unconventional ways. None of us were certain it was going to be successful, but we did know that we were not interested in “doing business as usual.” Well, we have survived and even thrived for close to half a century…

As the evils of society become stronger and more numerous, we recognize that as a larger and more influential company our responsibilities to society and our efforts to be an even more responsible company have also increased. The purpose of the revised edition of this book is to share what we have done in the last decade and what we plan to do in the decades ahead to achieve our goals."

Captions: (1) Let My People Go Surfing: [272 pages, Soft Cover, 6½×9½"] The previous edition lacked proper dividers to address this, chapter openers are the only instance of a full bleed photo paired up with generous white space. This allows the reader to know where they are and take a break; (2) Tools [288 pages, Soft Cover, 6½×9½"]. For over 20 years, Patagonia has organized a Tools Conference, where experts provide practical training to help activists be more effective in their fight. Now Patagonia has captured Tools’ best wisdom and advice into a book.
